Mayo AC held their third annual 5k Remembrance Run on New Year's Eve. The run also serves as the club's annual charity fundraiser.
This year the proceeds of donations go to the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation - a very worthy cause and for many an appropriate way to finish off the year.
‘Remembering those of our running family no longer with us’ is the theme of the annual event.
There was a excellent turnout of runners and walkers.
Windy conditions and overnight heavy rain made the out-and-back course a bit tricky. However, the rain held off and the event was enjoyed amid a lovely community spirit.
Many participants took the opportunity to blow away cobwebs and calories collected over the festive days, and mark the finish of the sporting year in a positive way.
John Byrne Mayo AC was first man back at Scoil Raifteiri in 18:15, followed closely by Alan Hegarty Castlebar AC and Tadgh Hanrahan Mayo AC. Dee Corcoran Mayo AC was first woman across the line in 22:10 with Noeleen McCool and Dee Prendergast next home.
The run was well supported by Mayo AC and by other local clubs and fitness groups, and included many family groups and young runners - great to see!
Thanks to everyone who supported the event.
Remembrance Run donations totalled €1,960.
Huge thanks to Mayo AC’s Colette Tuohy who was the lead organiser - she was well supported by a huge group of volunteers at the Greenway and Scoil Raifteiri. And of course by the excellent catering squad!
A big thank you to Angela O’Connor and Ann McDonnell who looked after the donations desk. And to Ann also for event promotion material.
Mile buíochas to Michael and Attracta Barrett of Turlough Stores who supplied welcome refreshments for all after the run.
Mayo AC are very grateful to Scoil Raifteiri - especially caretaker Noel, for use of their excellent facilities.
