Ballinrobe’s Oisín Joyce has been named U20 Athlete of the Year at the 123.ie National Athletic Awards.
Joyce won bronze at the World Athletics U20 Championships, becoming the first Irish person to claim a medal in the javelin event.
His 73.89m throw was also a national record, and the then 19 year old was just the fifth Irish person to win a medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships.
Joyce fought off tough competition for the award, with nominations for Elizabeth Ndudi (Dundrum South Dublin AC), Fintan Dewhirst (Tir Chonaill AC) and European U18 hammer throw champion Thomas Williams (Shercock AC).
