Mayo AC competitors were among the winners at Saturday's (June 7) Portumna Forest marathon event which consisted of four races – 50k, marathon, half-marathon and 10k.
The marathon involved eight laps of the forest trails. Darren Flanagan who has been enjoying ‘speed work’ in the Mayo AC 5k Series, ran brilliantly to win the race in an impressive 2:55.07, averaging 4:10 per k.
John Gordon M50 followed him home in second place in 3:04.44 – another great performance.
Colette Tuohy W55 was the first woman finisher in the half-marathon in 1:32.50 averaging 4:24ks over the four laps. How she fits it all in while leading a training group, organising events etc amid her busy life is truly inspirational.
On the previous Tuesday evening in Ballinrobe she helped marshal at the start and then set off behind the whole field and still came home in 21:30!
Well done too to Martin Fitzmaurice who was Mayo AC’s other half-marathon finisher in 2:09.00 – a great run by the Ballyhaunis M60 member.
Also on Saturday June 7: The Coney Island Adventure Run is a unique 10 mile (15k) run across a causeway to Coney Island and back.
Starting at Sligo Rugby Club at Strandhill, the course takes runners along the road to Sligo before they ‘race the tide’ crossing over the causeway to Coney Island. Runners turn around at a timing mat on the Island and return to the Rugby club finish line.
Mayo AC had two adventurers competing: Padraic and Angela McVann. Both have been in superb form recently recording pbs in the current Mayo AC 5k Series in three of the four races. Padraic has also run pbs for 10k and half-marathon this year.
In the Coney Island 10 mile Padraic finished 9th overall and was a 1st 050 prizewinner in 1:09.19, while Angela came home 3rd W50 in 1:29.32.
Great running, well done both!
Coney winners were Alan Dunne 58:23 and Aoife Kilgallon Sligo AC 59:50.
