Mayo have beaten Roscommon for the third time this year in senior football.
Kevin McStay’s side were two point winners in Dr. Hyde Park this evening in the second round of the All Ireland Senior Football Championship.
The sides were level at half time, 0-8 each, and traded scores throughout the third quarter too.
Ryan O’Donoghue scored the game’s opening goal on the hour mark from the penalty spot after being hauled down, putting five between the teams.
Eight minutes later Mayo’s second goal came when Donnacha McHugh palmed to the net.
Mayo’s six point lead lasted just two minutes, as Conor Cox scored from the penalty spot to set up an exciting finish.
Roscommon added scores deep into added time to make it a two point game but failed to stop the Mayo win.
The green and red were reduced to 14 for the last couple of minutes following a straight red card to Fergal Boland.
The Ballintubber Stores Man of the Match was named by Martin Carney as Westport’s Eoghan McLaughlin who contributed 0-3.
Next up for Mayo is a trip to take on the Dubs in a neutral venue yet to be confirmed.
Roscommon will go on the hunt for a win in their final game against Cavan if they are to advance.
