The Mayo senior footballers are up to second in the Allianz National League Division One table after a six point win over Roscommon this evening.
Kevin McStay’s side bounced back with a better performance this time out, after losing back to back league games.
Mayo started well, and were four points ahead when Stephen Coen struck over just after the 20 minute mark.
However, Roscommon hit back with three of their own to go in just one behind at the break – but they could have indeed been ahead.
All Star Enda Smith, a threat in every game he plays, tried to lob Colm Reape for a three pointer, but the Knockmore man tipped the ball away to keep Mayo ahead.
Half time score – Mayo one up, 0-7 to 0-6.
The home side found a different gear in the second half and hit seven unanswered points to go eight up.
Donnacha McHugh hit 0-2 in a dominant spell, with the other wing back Enda Hession also chipping in.
Roscommon got their first of the second half through Conor Cox on 56 minutes.
Scores from Ryan O’Donoghue and Cillian O’Connor late on helped Mayo to keep Roscommon at arm’s length.
The aforementioned O’Donoghue finished with 0-6, and was named the Ballintubber Stores Man of the Match by Midwest Radio’s co-commentator for the evening Michael Conroy.
Mayo now have a two week break before a home game against top side Derry on St. Patrick’s Day.
