The Mayo Cuman na mBunscoil Mini7’s finals day for hurling, camogie and development hurling takes place on this Thursday 20th April at the Connacht GAA Centre Astropitch in Bekan. It is the culmination of the last number of weeks of action for many schools in Mayo as the regional blitz toppers go head to head in the respective grades. The Mayo Cuman na mBunscoil Mini7’s hurling competition returns to the schools sporting calendar after an absence since 2019 due to the pandemic.
In the Boys Mini7’s hurling final, a novel pairing sees Taugheen NS (near Claremorris) take on Brackloon NS (near Westport), in a competition which saw 18 schools take part this year. Taugheen NS progressed through the South/East Mayo Blitz day with some convincing wins, while Brackloon NS beat off strong opposition in the North/West Mayo blitz day. Both teams are regulars on the Mayo hurling circuit and will be giving it their all for the title.
In the Girls Mini7’s camogie final, Brackloon NS are also contenders in this one, as they face Tooreen NS in this years decider. Brackloon NS came through the North/West camogie qualifier day where six schools took part, while Tooreen NS navigated the East/South camogie blitz topping eight other schools on their progression.
But the real evidence of the progression of hurling and camogie within Mayo Cuman na mBunscoil comes from the Development schools Mini7’s hurling competition which is proving very popular for smaller and developing hurling schools. With the relaxed nature of the development competition and the ability of schools to enter mixed teams (boys & girls), twenty-four schools in Mayo signed up to this years competition. Four teams will play their semi-finals and finals on Thursday with Ardagh NS (North Blitz), Carracastle NS (East Blitz), Quay NS (West Blitz and Straide NS (South/Mid Blitz) all progressing to the semi final stage.
It promises to be an exciting day for all eight teams involved, while referees for the day are Mel Kenny and Eddie Groarke. The action starts at 10.45am on Thursday at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence in Bekan.
