All Ireland champions Galway have hit the ground running in their Connacht Championship for 2023, winning away to Sligo in Markievicz Park.
The Tribesmen had four points to spare, just pulling away from David O’Neill’s Sligo in the second half.
Cian Carty started Sligo off well with his first of seven points for the day.
Five points on the spin for Galway helped them into a 0-6 to 0-3 lead in the first half, before Sligo opened the goalscoring on 20 minutes.
Aaron Lang struck an equalising goal to put Galway on notice, as Sligo held a 1-4 to 0-6 lead at the break.
A scrappy second half ensued, and Daniel Fitzmaurice put Galway back into the lead with a goal after Jack Heneghan’s effort hit the post.
The Moycullen striking duo of Charlie Cox and Seán Walsh added points to further the Galway cause, and they head into the second round with two points on the board.
Leitrim welcome Sligo to Avant Money Páirc Seán Mac Diarmada next Friday, while Roscommon make the trip to Galway seeking a first win.
