Breaffy National School in Ballina were delighted to welcome members of the Mayo Senior Football panel to their school for a training session on Tuesday last. The lucky fourth-class pupils were the winners of the ‘Portwest Play for a Day’ competition, in association with Mayo GAA, Mayo LGFA and Elverys Sports.

The school welcomed Padraig O’Hora, Colm Reape, Darren McHale and Conor Mc Stay of Mayo GAA, and Shauna Howley and Rachel Kerins of Mayo LGFA. Together with the pupils, they worked on footwork, hand passing and kicking techniques and the excitement was palpable in the air.

At the end of the session, the pupils swarmed the players to get their jerseys signed and a momentous day was had by all. Rachel Davoren, MD of Portwest Ireland, says ‘We really wanted to do something that would give the children in Mayo an opportunity to play with the team. They see them as heroes and it is great encouragement for them to follow in their steps, keeping the tradition of GAA alive and well in the county.’

Vincent Duffy, principal of Breaffy School, Ballina says ‘The kids will remember this day for a long time. They got their jerseys signed, to meet the players in person and to have a training session, it was a dream come true for them. Thanks to Portwest and Mayo GAA for making this happen.’

Seamus Tuohy, Chairman of Mayo GAA says, ‘We are delighted to be working with Portwest on this campaign. It is important to us to develop GAA within the county at grassroots level and anything that gets the kids in Mayo excited about sport, and in particular GAA, is positive for us.
