Connacht GAA secretary John Prenty has hit out at abuse subjected to their volunteers in a post on social media.
The Ballyhaunis man has described the amount of abuse being perpetrated to their volunteers as “a major cancer”.
His comments are contained in his annual report to the provincial convention, which takes place next Monday, in the GAA centre in Bekan.
Mr Prenty says “It appears anything can be said online, tweeted or written by faceless, nameless people.
He added to that point by stating it is not okay say whatever you like about:
–players who volunteer to play our games and who give of their best at all times
– club and county management teams
–referees who also volunteer to officiate at our games at all times
–county and club officers, who volunteer their time day-in and day-out and without whom our association would not survive.
Elsewhere in his report, the secretary warns against diminishing the influence of provincial councils.
He was speaking in the context of October’s special congress on the future of the intercounty football championship.
