A young man with Ballyhaunis connections has been called up by Republic of Ireland Under-21 manager Jim Crawford.

17-year-old midfielder John Joe Patrick Finn Benoa - who was born and reared in Spain to a Mayo father and mother from Cameroon - has pledged his international allegiance to Ireland.

But, although he is expected to feature against Switzerland this weekend, he may skip the subsequent games against Australia and Denmark due to exams.

The young Boys in Green are playing friendlies against Switzerland, Australia and Denmark - the first of which kicks off in Marbella on Sunday.

In all, there are seven newcomers in the party of 26.
