Westport GAA club are mourning the death of hurling stalwart Stephen Broderick Senior.

Stephen was a mainstay of the Westport GAA club in the 80s & 90s in particular, overseeing the revival of hurling in town along with other club figures.

He was a player, coach, manager & mentor to numerous hurling teams and also assumed officer roles in Bord na nOg and other areas.

Stephen was also a central figure in the redevelopment of the club’s main pitch in 1985, where his home county Galway played a Mayo All Star selection in a hurling tournament game.

He is remembered for bringing off numerous outstanding saves during that game against many Galway All Stars.

In a post on social media Westport GAA say that they are eternally grateful for the legacy Stephen has left to everyone involved in the club and extended sympathy to his family.

Funeral arrangements for Stephen have yet to be announced.
