The reason golf has not been allowed to return in any capacity in Ireland during Level 5 restrictions is because of golfgate.
That's the view of Paul O'Neill of Westport Golf Club, who says the sport will be suffering from the stigma of that event in Clifden for the next three or four years.
Paul says it is unfortunate from an organisational point of view that the governing bodies with golf changed for the first time in 100 years during the pandemic, with the Golf Ireland taking over from the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Lady's Golf Union.
He believes Golf Ireland should have been hammering on the door to Sport Ireland to advocate a return of the individualistic outdoor sport at the earliest opportunity.
