The Republic of Ireland ended their goal drought in Belgrade, but came up just short in their opening World Cup qualifier.
Stephen Kenny’s side went down 3-2 away to Serbia.
Substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic scored twice for the hosts, after Alan Browne had put Ireland ahead.
A late goal from James Collins made for a nervy final five minutes for Serbia, who did enough to collect the three points.
Ireland will look to recover on Saturday at home to Luxembourg.
