Ballina Golf Club has paid tribute to honorary member Jack Charlton, who passed away at his home in the UK on Friday.

The club says Big Jack was a sporting icon, a Leeds United legend, a World Cup winner and managed Ireland through their most successful spell ever at the Euros in '88, Italia '90 and USA '94.

Jack had a particular fondness for the West of Ireland, owning a house in Moy Heights, Ballina for a number of years so he could fish the River Moy, and when he wasn't fishing, he would be hitting the small ball at Ballina's parkland golf course, his preferred course for the golf and the craic.

Ballina Golf Club say Jack will be missed, and they're remembering his wife Pat and all the family in their thoughts and prayers at this time.
