Mayo triathlete Stephen Donnelly is currently undertaking an Ironman challenge to raise funds for his local Meals and Wheels service and the Mayo General Hospital Covid-19 fund for patients and staff.

The 33-year-old has started the challenge at his home in Ballina this morning and is using a commercial-size builders’ skip filled with water to mimic the full length swim, which will take about an hour.

The life guard and swimming teacher at Ballina swimming pool came 7th overall in Ironman Estonia last year and set a course record while winning the Hardman Long Distance Triathlon in Killarney.

The event is being live streamed on his Facebook page and he has already surpassed his 5,000 euro goal.
