Former Mayo star Liam McHale has been announced today as the new manager of Athlone GAA Club's senior football team.

The legendary Mayo midfielder’s coaching involvement includes working alongside fellow Mayo man Kevin McStay as part of the Roscommon management set-up until the 2019 season.

McHale was involved with the Mayo from 1985 until 1999 and won 8 Connacht titles, an All-star award and was famously red carded in the 1996 All-Ireland final replay against Meath.

McHale was also a part of Kevin McStay's management team when they guided St Brigid's club in Roscommon to All Ireland senior glory in 2013.
