Foxford Meals on Wheels has cancelled its services tomorrow Friday ,as a result of the weather.
They say it is the first time ever that they have had to do so.
As Storm Éowyn is expected to hit Ireland tonight and into tomorrow morning, Irish Rural Link – the national network representing the interests of rural communities – is urging people to take the Red Weather Warning seriously and to exercise extra caution.
The organisation is calling for heightened vigilance by everyone today and tomorrow, particularly regarding older and vulnerable neighbours. Given that the Red Weather Warning is the highest level of alert; it is crucial that everyone takes immediate steps to ensure their safety. One important action it is asking of people, is to check in on elderly and vulnerable individuals who may need assistance during severe weather.
People are asked to:
- Check on elderly and vulnerable neighbours:Ensure they are prepared for the storm and have all necessary supplies, including food, medication, water, and fuel. As Friday is a common day for elderly people to do shopping and collect medication, it is important to help them gather everything they need before the storm arrives.
- Ensure power backups:Check that they have working torches, spare batteries, and fully charged mobile phones. Power outages are expected, so it’s also crucial if they have a personal alarm, it is working and have it on their person.
- Secure the home:Help secure loose objects around their house, and make sure windows and doors are fully locked and secure to prevent any safety hazards.
- Stay in contact:Keep in touch with elderly and vulnerable neighbours throughout Friday. If they are in trouble or need assistance, they should feel comfortable reaching out to family members or neighbours.
