An historic building in North Mayo has been vandalised overnight.
An incident took place at the former Sisters of Mercy Convent in Ballina, whereby windows were smashed and badly damaged.
Last year, the building was handed over to the community by the Sister of Mercy, with renovations ongoing which has seen the roof of the building saved from collapse.
A series of works have also been carried out to prevent damaging effects of wet and dry rot, which could have caused serious problems for the building in the future.
While the Convent is located close to the former premises St. Mary’s Secondary School, which is in private ownership, the buildings are not connected.
An Garda Síochána are currently investigating the incident, and anyone with information is encouraged to make contact with them.
