Irish Rail will lodge a planning application for works to increase services towards Athenry this week.

It's looking for permission to build a one-kilometre section of double tracking at Oranmore Station, as well as a new platform.

The rail operator says this will allow it to double the frequency of trains between Athenry and Galway.

Its current layout doesn't offer trains an opportunity to pass going in separate directions.
