Mayo Fine Gael Deputy Michael Ring has this lunchtime confirmed that an exemption has been secured for active farmers from a new Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT)

Deputy Ring brought forward a motion on the issue to yesterday’s Fine Gael Parliamentary party meeting.

The motion called on the Government to exempt active farmland from the Residential Zoned Land Tax as it is causing great aggravation and upset to farmers who do not want to sell their land.

Deputy Ring has also today announced that €885,000 in additional funding has been allocated to Newport under the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund. This is in addition to the 5.6 million euro allocated to the town under the same scheme in 2022.

The monies will fund a  project that includes public realm works to enhance the streetscape in the town centre, including dark skies friendly lighting. The demolition of derelict buildings will allow the construction of an Enterprise and Tourism Hub.

Deputy Ring has been giving more details about this additional funding to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley
