Despite high demand for homes, 16 council houses in the Ballina area are vacant at present, and only two of these are set to be restored this year.
The situation is completely unacceptable, according to Killala based Fine Gael councillor Jarlath Munnelly.
The councillor called for an explanation as to why this is the case, in the midst of a housing crisis, at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council on Monday last.
Director of Services with Mayo County Council Tom Gilligan responded saying that the authority does not have the funding to restore more than two of these vacant properties this year.
At yesterday’s monthly meeting of Ballina Municipal District councillor Munnelly again raised his concerns over the matter and insisted that funding is found to restore all of these vacant home as quickly as possible.
