Local Election candidate Harry Barrett says that his electoral area of Castlebar needs four more GPs.
There are currently 12 GPs in the Castlebar urban area according to Mr. Barrett which does not meet the required standard.
He says that the Irish College of General Practitioners recommend that there are 12 GPs per 10,000 population.
Given figures from the 2022 census, the population of Castlebar is over 13,000, meaning that 12 GPs is not enough for the area.
Mr. Barrett believes that an increase in the number of GPs in the area to 16 would contribute to decreasing trolley numbers at Mayo University Hospital.
He wants the situation to be addressed by the HSE as ‘a matter of urgency.’
