New measures have been announced to boost the number of GPs in rural areas.

350 GP training places will be offered in the next few weeks, 22 per cent more than the year before.

While the International Medical Graduates Rural GP programme, set up last year, plans to recruit 250 experienced international GPs for rural practices by the end of the year.

The Irish College of General Practitioners says it believes the initiatives will help to ease shortages.
