First time buyer activity in the mortgage market last year reached its highest level since 2007.

Figures from the Banking and Payments Federation show while overall mortgage activity declined last year, approvals for first time buyers rose by 15.9 per cent, valued at more than 8.8 billion euro.

Chief Executive of the BPFI, Brian Hayes, says first time buyers accounted for almost 26-thousand mortgages.
