The number of tourist beds lost to county Mayo over the past 12 months, as many former tourist accommodations are being used to house refugees and asylum seekers needs to be urgently addressed.

That’s the view of Westport based Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn.

The councillor raised his concerns again about the situation at this week’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council highlighting the impact on the local economy.

He says it’s another reason why councillors unanimously called for all cooperation to immediately cease between Mayo County Council staff and the Dept of Integration regarding the accommodation of refugees and asylum seekers in the county until the necessary resources and facilities are put in place for the communities affected.

Earlier this week the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar said the government will provide a special support package to the 10 areas nationally with the highest proportion of refugees and asylum seekers.
