A Sligo based councillor has called for the current pilot programme for counselling services to be rolled out nationwide as a matter of urgency.

A pilot scheme for counselling in primary schools was rolled out in mayo, Leitrim, Cavan, Laois, Longford, Tipperary and Monaghan, with the Minister for Education making that announcement in May of last year.

 The services include up to six counselling sessions per child.

Independent councillor Marie Casserly believes that at a time when some children are waiting long periods of time to avail of HSE services, a counselling service such as this can provide help in the interim.

Councillor Casserly told Midwest Radio's Alannah Nolan that this is a vital facility that should be rolled out in all counties....
