People living in some coastal areas may need to abandon their homes in the decades ahead, as sea levels rise and erosion worsens.

According to the Irish Independent the government says a 'managed retreat' strategy, which would see a move away from the sea, needs to be developed.

It says the strategy is needed before an emergency arises.

The comments come following the publication of the National Coastal Change Management Strategy.
