Plans have been approved for a medical device manufacturing plant near Athenry, which is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs.

Dexcom International Limited has been granted permission by Galway County Council for a 40,000 square metre facility in Ballygarraun, subject to a number of conditions.

According to RTÉ, the Council have approved the development in line with the County Development Plan which will secure proper planning and sustainable development of the area.

In terms of the conditions relating to the approval, they relate to the management and protection of the existing environment around the site.

Dexcom is a US multinational company, making glucose monitoring technologies for the management of diabetes.

The Galway based plant will be the company’s first manufacturing site in Europe and will be built on IDA owned lands.
