The former Irish Times columnist Michael Viney, who had lived in county Mayo since 1977, has died at the age of 90.
A tribute to Michael in today’s Irish Times reads…The journalist, broadcaster, painter and natural-history author wrote his first article for The Irish Times in May 1962, about leaving London, where he worked for the Evening Standard newspaper, to spend a sabbatical year living in a cottage in Connemara.
It was the start of a relationship with The Irish Times and its readers that lasted more than 60 years.
In 1977, after covering social affairs for the newspaper, he moved with his wife, Ethna, and their daughter, Michele, from Dublin to Thallabawn, outside Louisburgh, in Co Mayo, to live as self-sufficiently as they could in a house on an acre of land by the Atlantic Ocean.
