While overcrowding at the Emergency Department of Mayo University Hospital continues, there is no plan in place, despite promises, to extend the facility.

That’s according to the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District, Michael Kilcoyne.

The independent councillor is a member of the HSE West Forum and he raised the matter at a recent meeting with HSE management.

He says despite continuous government promises to provide a new extended ED, at the Castlebar hospital, the reality 15 years down the line is that the ED remains exactly the same, while the population served by the facility continues to grow.

The Cathaoirleach asked HSE Management what had been done to address the problems for patients in the ED of MUH as highlighted by HIQA inspectors when they visited the hospital in August of last year (2022).

He told Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley that the reality is that there are no plans drawn up for a proposed new ED, therefore no planning application has been submitted for it, and so he says “we are still no further ahead, than we were 15 years ago when the new facility was promised”….
