Hospital staff have been asked to 'volunteer' to work over the June bank holiday weekend.
HSE chief Bernard Gloster has written to staff asking them to take on extra shifts to avoid the 'dreadful position' hospitals were left in following recent long weekends.
Over 700 patients were on trolleys following the May bank holiday.
According to the Irish Daily Mail, Mr. Gloster said in the letter to staff that repeated scenes of overcrowding would have 'implications for the rest of the healthcare system'.
