Airlines have been fined 1 point 4 million euro for allowing passengers to board without passports.

The Business Post reports the State has been trying to reduce the number of people, turning up without passports, who apply for international protection.

Figures from the Department of Justice show Gardaí have issued 985 such fines to airlines operating out of Irish airports last year.

A fine of 1 thousand 500 euro is in place for airlines that are found to have allowed passengers to board without a passport or valid visa.
