A Mayo deputy has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Agriculture that turf cutting on commonage land used to apply for the ACRES scheme won't affect farmers scoring.

The news comes after weeks of uncertainty in the farming sector as to whether farmers would be penalised if a person with turbary rights cut turf on land that was being submitted for scoring under the ACRES scheme.

Sinn Fein Deputy Rose Conway Walsh submitted the issue as a topical question in the Dail last night, and in a statement from Minister Charlie McConalogue, the department says that farmers will not suffer if a shareholder decides to cut turf on that land.
