In recognition of his unparalleled contribution to Mayo GAA, a two-part documentary has been produced to celebrate the life and times of Paddy Muldoon. Part one of the documentary will be broadcast on TV Ireland at 7pm on Sky Channel 186 this evening (Thursday 4th May), with part two to follow at the same time on 11th May.
Paddy Muldoon, an Aughagower native, began his GAA journey with Islandeady where he won a West Mayo junior medal in 1959. He became an instrumental figure in the local GAA community. In the mid-sixties, Paddy became chairman of the Westport club, a position he held for nine years. He also managed the successful Westport junior team that won the county junior championship.
His passion for the game was undeniable. In 1971, he was a selector on the Mayo minor team, which went on to win the All-Ireland that year. Paddy was also a selector for the Mayo senior team in the early seventies.
In 1980, Paddy was elected chairman of the Mayo County Board, and during his eight-year term, the county won two Connacht senior titles, an All-Ireland U21 title, and a minor title. When he stepped down, he headed straight for Croke Park and Central Council, where he remained for many years.
He was a member of the Mayo County Board in numerous capacities for over 50 years and also President of Westport GAA.
