Staff at the Port of Galway have covered up a former army vehicle that was parked in the harbour, as it bore a Russian flag.

The eight wheeler OT-64 was left near an apartment building close to the entrance to Galway Docks.

RTÉ are reporting that Labour Party Councillor Níall McNelis said he was alerted to the tank-like vehicle by a number of Ukrainian refugees who were upset by its presence.

He described the scene as “grotesque and offensive” to those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

Workers at the harbour covered the Russian flag with a bag, which was on top of a mast at the rear of the vehicle.

They also erected fencing around the vehicle and partially covered it from sight with a number of plastic sheets.
