A man who had been held in custody on suspicion of murder after an alleged assault in County Cavan has been released.

A man in his 50s was found unresponsive with serious injuries at a home in Blacklion on Thursday morning.

Despite medical intervention he was later pronounced dead by paramedics.

The male in his 30s who was detained at Castlerea Garda Station has been released from that detention and is no longer suspected of any criminality in this incident. 

The post-mortem examination has been completed in this case. An Garda Síochána does not comment on the specific results of post mortem examinations for operational reasons.

However, as a result of preliminary results provided to An Garda Síochána, foul play is no longer suspected in this incident.

An Garda Síochána continue to investigate this matter for the preparation of a coroner inquest file only.
