A man accused of the murder of 83-year- old John Brogan at his Co. Mayo home on Sunday last was remanded in custody to March 24 this morning (Friday).

Kevin McHale, Annagh, Castlebar, appeared before Judge James Faughnan at a sitting of Harristown Remand Court.

He is charged with the murder of John Brogan, Pheasant Hill, Cloonkeen, Castlebar.

The accused has been in prison since Tuesday last when he was charged with murder at Castlebar Garda Station and later appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon at the local district court where he was remanded in custody.

At today's brief hearing in Harristown Court, the accused, who was in another part of the Castlerea prison complex, joined in the proceedings via videolink.

Myles Gilvarry, solicitor, asked for legal aid for the accused. 

He also sought a psychiatric assessment.

Judge Faughnan acceded to an application by the State for a remand in custody to March 24 in order to await DPP directions.

A number of relatives of the accused were in the courtroom for the hearing.
