Proposals are now to go before cabinet calling for stricter penalties against those who assault a member of an Garda Síochána or any member of emergency personnel.

The news has been welcomed by Councillor Marie Casserly who has been pushing for such legislation for many months.

It comes in the wake of many attacks on members of an Garda Síochána in recent times, most recently at the end of last month in Ballyfermot.

The Independent Councillor says with stricter penalties, people may think twice before committing an offence.
