A Sligo councillor has called for EU legislation to allow traceability of social media accounts in a bid to stop trolling and bullying online.
As of now, anyone can set up multiple social media accounts and do not need to verify who they are.
Councillor Marie Casserly believes people should have to verify who they are behind the account, and that this may prevent 'keyboard warriors' abusing people on social media.
Councillor Casserly told Midwest Radio's Alannah Nolan that such verification is done on the likes of Revolut, so it should be able to be rolled out on other platforms.
She raised the issue at the monthly meeting of Sligo County Council....
