The region is under gloom this afternoon following the tragic deaths of two men, aged in their 20s, overnight.

Gardaí attended the scene of a two vehicle road traffic collision, involving a car and an articulated truck, around midnight last night along the N60 between Balla and Claremorris last night at Facefield.

The young men have not yet been named but it's believed they are from the East Mayo area.

Their bodies have been removed to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital where post-mortems will take place in due course.

The driver of the truck (30s) was taken to Mayo University Hospital as a precaution.

The road is currently closed with local diversions in place. Garda Forensic Collision investigators will conduct their examination of the scene this morning.

The road is likely to remain closed to traffic for most of today.

Motorists are generally advised to divert through Kiltimagh, and larger vehicles are advised to use the N5 or the N84 to avoid the area.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station 094 903 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

Local Councillor Tom Connolly has paid this tribute to both men...
