More homes were built last year than any year since 2009.
Figures from the CSO show 29,815 homes were built in 2022 with more than 9,000 of those coming in the last three months of the year.
However, figures prepared by the Housing Commission, seen by The Irish Times, have suggested government targets are well below what is really required.
They suggest between 42 and 62 thousand new homes are needed every year out to 2050 - much more than the government target of 33,000.
