A treacherous footpath on George’s Street in Newport, was the focus of the elected councillors for West Mayo yesterday, as they held their monthly meeting in Newport.
Ahead of the meeting in Hotel Newport, councillors from the Westport/ Belmullet Municipal District met with local concerned residents about the safety issues for pedestrians, of every age, as they try to tackle a very inadequate footpath on a busy stretch of road.
In places, the footpath on George’s Street in the town is barely a foot wide, and people are forced to walk out on the busy street to allow each other to pass.
Mayo County Council has been engaging with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in an attempt to get an interim solution to the problem, as quickly as possible, ahead of major regeneration work in the town.
It appears that a temporary solution is now being considered.
