There are people on the streets in Westport with signs saying that they are “homeless”, and according to local councillor Christy Hyland, these people are not homeless.
At the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council the Independent councillor condemned the begging on streets in Westport, and other towns in the region, as “a scam to collect money”.
He says, he knows for a fact, that some of the people begging with homeless signs in Westport, have never approached or sought housing assistance in the Westport Local Authority office. He claims they couldn’t because they have homes and they drive or are driven to their residences at the end of a day begging on a Westport street,.
