The HSE has spent more than 7 million euro on interpreters and translators over the last two and a half years.
According to details released under the Freedom of Information Act, 3.4 million euro was spent last year.
Doctors and nurses are dealing with over 200 languages and dialects on a daily basis in A&E departments, GP surgeries and clinics.
Dr Mary Phelan, chairperson of the Irish Translators' and Interpreters' Association, says doctors depend on the information provided by the interpreter to obtain an accurate medical history.
