ALDI Ireland has been refused planning permission by An Bord Pleanála for a proposed new store on Monivea Road, Ballybrit, Galway.

In a statement from ALDI Ireland, the permission was denied following an appeal from Tesco and RGDATA (The Retail Grocery Dairy And Allied Trade Association), despite support from local authorities.

Earlier this year, the store announced a further €63 million funding for investment in new stores in the West of Ireland.

In the statement, Regional Managing Director Colin Breslin added:

“Regrettably, we have already been experiencing long delays in An Bord Pleanála’s approvals process, with a decision on this application due 37 weeks ago. These delays mean more communities are losing out on the benefits that ALDI brings to local economies when they are needed more than ever.”
