The refurbishment and conversion of the old library into an Intreo Centre for Social Welfare services for Tuam and the North Galway region is now complete.

That’s according to local Independent Deputy Sean Canney, who says it is now is handed over to the Department of Social Welfare.

These offices will supplement the social protection offices in Church View which will remain in place.

Finna Construction from Cong have handed the building over and its understood plans are in place to move staff into the modern facility in the coming weeks.

Deputy Canney says the project represents an investment of approximately €3 million in Tuam and will bring an iconic building back into use, which will attract further footfall.

The works include the installation of a lift to all floors for universal access and a complete rewiring and new heating installation to meet modern standards.

The project was managed by the Office of Public Works on behalf of the Department of Social Protection.

Deputy Canney told Midwest News that he is delighted that the Department agreed to his proposal to retain the existing stone façade exposed as a showcase of the building’s historic nature.
