ATU Castlebar students will sleep out for the Simon Community on the ATU pitch in the county town tomorrow  to raise awareness of the ongoing homelessness crisis in Ireland.

Lauren Lynch and Dominyka Repeckaite, fourth year students at the ATU in Castlebar, are organising the event  and will be among a group of students who will camp out tomorrow evening, from 7 pm until Saturday morning.

The Simon Community aims to address and prevent homelessness in Ireland.

Last night in Eyre Square in Galway city, a group of students slept out to protest against the accommodation crisis.

The University of Galway Student’s Union was highlighting the large number of students who are unable to secure a place to live in Galway, this academic year.

Rent measures announced in the Budget will have very little impact for students, according to the USI.

The union representing students says it plans to go ahead with its walkout on October 13th, as many will be in the same position they were in before Tuesday.

Student fees for this year have been cut by 1 thousand euro, while SUSI recipients will receive a once off double payment under plans announced this week.

But USI president, Beth O'Reilly, says the proposed tax credit for renters won't apply for many attending college...
