The new temporary Emergency Department (ED) at Galway University Hospital looks set to be open very shortly.

That was confirmed yesterday by HSE West Management at the HSE West Forum Meeting held in Merlin Park.

Galway councillor John Connolly asked for a date for the facility’s opening and was told that the construction of the temporary facility got underway in June of last year,2021, and its due to be completed in third quarter of this year.

The handover of the Phase 1 temporary Emergency Department from the contractor occurred last month (August), with commissioning currently underway.

The aim is to open the temporary ED by the beginning of next month, October 2022.

The temporary ED will have more capacity with 43 patient bays compared to 34 bays in the pre-COVID ED. The temporary ED will provide 43 single closed cubicles & extra Resuscitation bays providing greater dignity and privacy for patients.
