The suggestion to cull one million cows to meet climate targets will create absolute uproar in rural Ireland and is absolutely crazy.
That’s the view of ICSA president Dermot Kelleher who is responding to reports in the Irish Times today that a €2 billion farm retirement scheme is being considered by Government in a bid to encourage farmers to exit farming and drastically reduce cow numbers in order to meet climate change targets.
Mr. Kelleher is calling on the Government to immediately clarify that a briefing document with this level of economic and social insanity will be binned immediately.
He says no responsible government in their right minds would contemplate such a level of carnage in our most important indigenous sector.
He has been giving more details to Midwest News.
