CCTV cameras that are being erected in our communities need to be there to serve the common good.
That's according to local councillor Mark Duffy.
The topic was discussed at the recent joint policing committee meeting in Mayo where councillors raised their concerns about the amount of red tape surrounding these cameras in the county needs to be addressed.
Councillor Duffy outlined one such incident in Ballina where CCTV cameras, that were installed to monitor illegal dumping, could not be used in a criminal matter if an incident occurred.
He told Midwest Radio's Alannah Nolan that gardai should be able to use footage from these cameras if an incident did arise.
